Advisor on Artificial Intelligence to the Minister of Defence and Professor, Politecnico di Torino
Barbara Caputo is Full Professor at the Politecnico di Torino, where she serves as the Rector’s Representative for Artificial Intelligence.
She earned her PhD in Computer Science from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and has built an international research career in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics.
In 2014, she became the first Italian researcher to receive a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Grant in the field of computer vision. She is a co-founder of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and an ELLIS Fellow.
She contributed to the design of Italy’s National PhD Program in Artificial Intelligence and led the National PhD Program“AI & Industry.” She was also a member of the expert group of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) that drafted Italy’s National AI Strategy.
In 2022, she co-founded FocoosAI, a spin-off of the Politecnico; since April 2025, she has been Artificial Intelligence Advisor to the Italian Minister of Defence.
